The Beat Went On Across China, Through Downpours and Outpourings of Friendship:  Over mountains and valleys, despite a monsoon and the ever-present language barrier, The Beat Goes On Marching Band (TBGO) charmed thousands of Chinese from Shanghai to The Great Wall earlier this month. The all-adult marching band, based in Portland, has just returned from a 12-day tour which included stops in Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou and Beijing.

$50,000 State Department Grant Helps Band Cross the Pacific - A century ago, Portland’s association with Shanghai was underground and steeped in mystery. Come September, another band of Portlanders will be “Shanghaied” … but they can’t wait to go! “One of the best things," says music director Steve Tolopka, "is we’re getting a $50,000 assist from the U.S. Department of State.”

Parade Season Brings a Call for New Members - You don’t have to be a lifelong musician to join in the fun. “I'm still working on a couple of people who say ‘It's been so long since I played.’ I always tell them that most of the current band members said the same thing before they joined,” says trumpeter Judy Lugar, one of TBGO’s best recruiters. “I tell them it comes back pretty easily and that practice makes perfect!"

Canby Festival Showcases Area’s Best Adult Bands - Nine bands, with players from across the region, will make a joyful noise in Canby on Saturday, Apr. 5 at the sixth-annual Oregon Adult Band Festival. The Festival features only adult bands, so don’t expect to see lots of tassled uniforms and teenaged drum majors.
